The Section of Anatomic Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University invites applicants for anatomic pathology residency positions which begin on July 1 of each year. These are three-year training positions designed to prepare candidates for careers in veterinary pathology and certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

The Section of Anatomic Pathology at Cornell provides diagnostic pathology support for the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center. The training is case-based, using submissions received by the Diagnostic Center for necropsy and surgical pathology services. The residents receive wide exposure to companion, agricultural, laboratory, and wildlife animal pathology. Resident learning is supplemented by resident and faculty-organized seminars, lectures, and weekly surgical and gross pathology rounds. Opportunities exist for post-residency graduate research training in a variety of laboratories at Cornell or anatomic pathology fellowship specialty training. A DVM degree or equivalent from an AVMA accredited or AVMA listed (https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/2020-03/ecfvg12.pdf) school and an outstanding academic record, as well as excellent interpersonal skills and a strong interest in veterinary pathology, are required.

The annual salary for a resident is $45,000 (FY 2024).

For the third-year resident in the laboratory animal pathology track, salary is based on the NIH post-doctoral scale and commensurate with experience, and subsidized housing is available.

New! Residency in Anatomic Pathology with laboratory animal focus

The Cornell University Department of Biomedical Sciences, Section of Anatomic Pathology, and the Laboratory of Comparative Pathology (LCP) of The Rockefeller University’s Comparative Bioscience Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Hospital for Special Surgery, and Weill Cornel Medicine’s Center of Comparative Medicine and Pathology are proud to announce the availability of one residency position in the laboratory animal/anatomic pathology track, to begin on July 1, 2024. The LCP provides diagnostic and research pathology support to the animal care programs and investigators using a wide variety of animal models at 4 major biomedical research institutions.

The appointment is renewable annually assuming satisfactory performance. This program is designed to prepare candidates for a career in veterinary anatomic pathology and certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, with special emphasis on laboratory animal pathology. 

The anatomic pathology resident with laboratory animal focus spends the first two years of their training at Cornell's Ithaca campus and the third year at the multi-institutional campus of the LCP in New York City. Both Ithaca and New York City offer numerous educational, social, and recreational opportunities.

In person externships and visits to our program are available on a case-by-case basis. For those interested in our program, but unable to visit, we offer zoom meetings. Applications must contain the following to be considered complete:

2. Curriculum Vitae;
   • Please list the names and addresses of your references at the end of your CV.
3. Official Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended;
   • These must be received directly from the college/university registrar via e-mail to raemail@cornell.edu. If e-mail is not possible, they must be provided in sealed envelopes stamped with the registrar's seal across the flap.
4. Three Letters of Professional Reference;
   • Referring individuals should send references via e-mail directly to raemail@cornell.edu. If e-mail is not possible, these must be received in sealed envelopes with the reference's signature across the envelope flap.
   • At least one letter of reference must be from a veterinary anatomic pathologist.
5. Statement of Career Goals (~1 page)
6. Diversity statement. No more than 1 page.
7. Official TOEFL Score Report
   • Applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL and have the official scores reported to Cornell, using Institutional Code: 8839, by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The TOEFL is the only English proficiency test accepted by this program and scores from other testing organizations will not be considered.

Please note: Because language proficiency can change considerably in a short period of time, TOEFL scores are only valid for two years from the test date. If you took the TOEFL more than two years prior to the date of your application to this program you must take the test again in order to have your scores reported.

Students who are currently studying full time, for at least two years, at a college or university where English is the language of instruction, located in a country where English is the native language, may be exempted from submitting TOEFL scores. We ask those individuals who feel they should qualify for a waiver to send a letter requesting such and detailing their reasoning along with their application materials well in advance of the application deadline for prior approval.

Applicants are encouraged to apply well in advance of the deadline and to send all application materials electronically to raemail@cornell.edu whenever possible. If items must be sent through the mail, please be aware that FedEx and UPS are the only express services that can guarantee door-to-door delivery to our office. USPS mail posted a week before the deadline is unlikely to arrive at our office in time.
