Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences
Sponsor: NEW YORK FARM VIABILITY INSTITUTE (NYFVI)
Grant Number: FVI R1 10
Title: Development of engaging and accessible bilingual training resources for the dairy workforce
Project Amount: $91,763
Project Period: April 2025 to March 2027

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant):

Employee training in the dairy industry is challenging. About 70% of dairy employees are Spanish-first
speakers from different origins. Little effort has been made to study what learning methods are most effective
for employees. Thus, this proposal aims to address two key questions: “Can artificial intelligence (AI)
effectively translate dairy-related texts such as job aids or training materials from English to Spanish?” and
“What learning methods increase learner engagement for dairy employees?” If AI can effectively translate
texts, then the language barrier between management and employees can be reduced, and identifying
learning preferences could lead to more effective training programs available across dairy farms in NY.
