Title: SACP Student Surgery Teaching Programs
Project Amount: $90,000
Project Period: July 2025 to June 2026

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant):

The Student Surgery Teaching Programs at SACP serve all fourth-year veterinary students (n = 123) during their 2-week CPS rotation and 60 to 80 students who complete an additional 2-week PCS rotation. These rotations are the bulk of students’ exposure to small animal primary care settings in the curriculum at Cornell University. This funding will support three Student Surgery Teaching Programs at SACP that provide opportunities for students to develop their surgical skills and engage in access-to-veterinary-care programs. First, students will travel to local animal shelters to provide feline spay/neuter services through a partnership with Shelter Outreach Services (SOS). The students are accompanied by an SACP LVT and supervised by an SOS veterinarian. Second, students will provide feline spay/neuter services at SACP via high-quality high-volume spay and neuter (HQHVSN) clinics. Veterinarians from the Shelter Medicine service at Cornell University teach the students surgical and anesthetic techniques for HQHVSN services, including auto-ligation, the use of spay hooks, and suture patterns, and supervise the clinics. Third, the PCS rotation provides students with an intensive experience in commonly performed surgical procedures. The rotation serves shelter and rescue animals and currently focuses on canine spays and castrations, which are performed for no cost to the shelters.
