Research Interest

My research focus encompasses the central theme of "One Health", i.e., that human, animal, and environmental health are all intricately related topics. My research interest, broadly stated, is in the area of infectious diseases.  This includes the areas of preharvest food safety and the security of our food supply. In a related area the ability to subtype or fingerprint bacteria derived from the food chain directly support food safety research by allowing us to trace bacterial infections in animal groups (pets, flocks, herds), in the environment, and in the food supply of people; this has developed into the research area of molecular epidemiology. I am interested in the epidemiology of salmonellosis in animals, birds, and people as part of the broader area of comparative (medical-veterinary) public health issues and in the surveillance of disease in populations.  On the animal level I am interested in the microbial ecology of the gastrointestinal tract, and in the virulence mechanisms and the pathogenesis of enteric bacterial infections (Salmonella, E. coli, Helicobacter, Clostridium perfringens, C. difficile, and Campylobacter).  A companion issue is the prevention and control of disease with vaccination and other preventative measures that relate to an understanding of the ecology of zoonotic diseases.  This latter area includes research into antimicrobial resistance in enteric bacteria such as Salmonella. I am interested in the development and validation of new diagnostic assays for use in clinical microbiology.  Another area of interest mycology should provide many avenues of research, i.e., antifungal therapies, fungal ecology, medical mycology to name a few.
