The Office of Inclusion & Academic Excellence (OIAE) is pleased to announce that we are partnering with the New York Blood Center (NYBC) to host a Blood Drive on February 20^th, 2024 from 9:30 am-3:30 pm. The NYBC is one of the largest community-based, non-profit collection and distribution organizations in the United States. The NYBC is also dedicated to the study of blood-borne and blood-related diseases through research and medicine including sickle cell disease.

To honor the lives, contributions, legacies, accomplishments, and impact of Americans who are of African descent, the OIAE is dedicated to spreading awareness of sickle cell disease and the impact it has on people of African descent. “This inherited red cell disorder is most common among African Americans, affecting an estimated 10,000 New Yorkers, 100,000 in the U.S., and millions worldwide. The condition alters the oxygen-carrying red blood cells, causing them to clog small blood vessels. As a result, patients suffer excruciating pain episodes, and the lack of oxygen delivery to the tissues causes severe damage to their major organs (NYBC).
