Testing a New Creatinine Meter for Pigs
We are testing a new, bedside meter to measure creatinine in pigs. Creatinine helps show us how healthy the kidneys are. Traditional tests at a lab require about a teaspoon of blood, while this meter uses only a drop.
This meter is currently used for humans and goats. We hope to prove it is also accurate for pigs so it might become a useful too in hospital and field settings.
Eligibility: Any pig seen by the Nemo Farm Animal Hospital that has an IV catheter placed or needs blood sampled for clinical reasons is eligible to enroll in the study.
Compensation: We will pay the cost of running the creatinine test in the lab and on the meter. You will receive a 10% discount on the study-related visit. You are responsible for the costs of anything else not related to the study.
Owner Responsibilities: If your pig has blood drawn or an IV catheter placed, we will collect a very small amount of blood to test on the meter and send to the lab for creatinine. We will see if the number from the meter is the same as the lab test. We will do this a maximum of three times per visit.
