Faculty member earns professorship

Dr. Thomas Divers, an innovative teacher, interdisciplinary researcher, and world renowned clinician, has been named the Rudolph J. and Katharine L. Steffen Professor of Veterinary Medicine, effective November 1, 2013.

Dr. Thomas Divers

A professor of medicine in the Department of Clinical Sciences, Dr. Divers specializes in the field of large animal medicine. His particular field of research is equine motor neuron disease, lyme disease, protozoal myelitis and other advances in internal medicine and critical care of equine or bovine. He has established a highly productive and collaborative research program and has made many outstanding contributions to the practice of veterinary internal medicine. Dr. Divers has published in more than 185 peer reviewed reports of clinical observations, of research on clinical patients, and of experimental and pharmacokinetic studies. He has received significant research funding to support his clinical scholarship. Dr. Divers has received numerous teaching awards that recognize his distinguished teaching career both in the classroom and in the clinic. He is a double boarded clinician having achieved board status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

The Rudolph J. and Katharine Steffen Professorship of Veterinary Medicine was established in October 1992 with an endowment gift from Dr. Rudolph Steffen DVM. ’34. Dr. Steffen operated a mixed veterinary practice in Horseheads, NY, for many years, retiring in 1968. The gift reflects the Steffens’ longstanding interest in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Cornell University. They were honored in May 1990 as Builders of Cornell.
