Selenium Deficiency

(NY) Selenium deficiency: Three 3-5 month old beef calves were found dead in a small herd with about 10-12 adults. The animals did not have any prior signs of illness. A necropsy was performed on one of the calves and no gross abnormalities were detected. Histopathology of skeletal and heart muscle revealed moderate, multifocal, myocyte degeneration and mineralization. In addition, the selenium level in the liver was 0.38 ppm, consistent with a moderate to marked deficiency. All of the animals appeared to be in good body condition with a diet of hay only and access to a mineral block.
