Clinical Pathology
The Clinical Pathology Laboratory is a high-volume, high-quality laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art analyzers. We provide diagnostic testing and professional consultation services to the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, to researchers affiliated with Cornell University, and to private veterinary practitioners and researchers throughout New York, the USA, and worldwide. We are part of both the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences and the Cornell Animal Health Diagnostic Center.

What we do
Mission
Professional diagnostic service
We are committed to performing high-quality, timely, comprehensive, and accurate laboratory testing of animal specimens in the areas of hematology, clinical chemistry, diagnostic cytology, immunology, and urinalysis. As part of this service, we provide professional consultation for our laboratory results.
Education
We are dedicated to educating current and future veterinarians in clinical pathology through our residency program, interactive case-based lectures, laboratories and seminars, elective laboratory rotations for students, interns and residents, and web-based educational resources (see eClinPath).
Research
We are committed to contributing to the advancement of knowledge in clinical pathology through investigative research. Our faculty and residents are actively involved in clinical applied research, which is a vital component of our residency training program. Current research areas of interest are:
- Hematopoietic neoplasia, such as leukemia and lymphoma
- Thrombotic disorders in animals
- Hematologic disorders, including iron deficiency anemia and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia
People
Our laboratory is staffed by four clinical pathologists, all of whom are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, a laboratory manager, multiple medical technologists and veterinary technicians, and three administrative assistants. We also have three training positions including two clinical pathology residents and one intern.
Our research
Clinical Pathology performs testing for a variety of researchers and contract laboratories. We can create customized panels, consisting of specific tests for research projects. We also provide consultation on study design (if desired), how to submit samples (with examples of request forms), and guidance on optimal sample collection, labeling, and shipping.
For all research projects, the project leader (or designated representative) must contact our laboratory manager before any samples can be accepted for analysis. We will require the following information when setting up a research account:
- Lipid abnormalities
- Hematologic disorders, such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia
- Hematopoietic neoplasia, such as leukemia and lymphoma
- Thrombotic disorders in animals
The laboratory manager will use this information to formulate a plan so your research project will be performed in the most efficient manner possible.
