Comparative Coagulation Submission Guidelines

Sample Collection for All Coagulation and vWF Assays

Do not collect blood in a dry syringe. Use one of the following methods.

  1. Vacutainer method:  Use a vacutainer needle or vacutainer butterfly catheter to draw blood directly into a citrate (blue top) vacutainer tube.  Make sure the tube is in-date and completely filled by vacuum.
  2. Syringe method:  Draw an exact amount of citrate into a syringe using one of the following ratios:
0.2 ml citrate + 1.8 ml blood = 2.0 ml total sample volume
0.3 ml citrate + 2.7 ml blood = 3.0 ml total sample volume
0.4 ml citrate + 3.6 ml blood = 4.0 ml total sample volume
  3. Perform venipuncture to collect desired total sample volume.
  4. Transfer blood to a plastic tube for centrifugation.

Sample Processing

  • Centrifuge the whole blood sample for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Aspirate plasma and transfer to a clean plastic shipping tube
  • Store plasma frozen. Ship on cold packs (or dry ice if special study)
  • DO NOT FREEZE WHOLE BLOOD

Litter Discount Fees for vWD Screening:

Requires submission of samples from entire litter AND pedigree, registered name/number, and accession numbers of dam and sire's previous test results.  If both parents have not been tested, or if accession numbers or results are not available, the parent(s) samples can be submitted with litter at no additional charge.

Cold Packs or Dry Ice:

Cold packs are acceptable for most routine coagulation assays.  Certain specialized or confirmatory tests are best performed on samples submitted on dry ice. Contact the laboratory directly at 607-253-3648 with any questions.

Special Studies:

This manual lists routine tests only. There are many additional assays that we perform upon request. Please contact the laboratory directly at 607-253-3648 for any special requests.
