Special Summer course: Genomic Data Science in Dogs

Unlock the secrets of the canine genome this summer at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Join this exciting 6-week 3 credit course (Jun 22 - Jul 31, 2026) Genomic Data Science in Dogs and learn how to analyze real datasets from world-class canine research. Instruction Mode: Distance Learning-Asynchronous

Watch our YouTube video Genomic data science in dogs (video with transcripts) or the keynote interview with the professors teaching this course.

This course introduces students to genomic data science using real genomic datasets from cutting-edge dog genetic research. Students will learn key background concepts for understanding genomics, develop key skills for accessing and evaluating genomic data, and discuss future opportunities and ethical concerns regarding dog and human genetic testing. As part of the course, students will be introduced to both genetics and data science and will also have the option to do commercial genetic testing on their own pet dog. This is an intensive, interactive course including asynchronous lecture material, optional live office hours, online discussion, and multiple problem sets involving different genetic databases.

Undergraduate Education & Summer College

BTS faculty contribute to both undergraduate education and summer college instruction.  BTS runs one (Animal Physiology) of the fourteen undergraduate concentrations in the university's Biological Sciences major.  A director of undergraduate studies (DUS) for Animal Physiology is appointed from within BTS to coordinate with the department Chair to administer the concentration.

The undergraduate courses taught by the BTS faculty are as follows:

  • BIOAP 3110: Principles of Animal Physiology (Fall)
  • BIOAP 3160: Cellular Physiology (Spring)
  • BIOAP 3190: Laboratory in Physiology (Fall)
  • BIOAP 3200: Introduction to Veterinary Anatomy (Spring)
  • BIOAP 4000: Cancer Genetics and Epigenetics (Fall)
  • BIOAP 4020: Cell Signaling and Cancer (Spring)
  • BIOAP 4130: Histology - the Biology of Tissues (Fall)
  • BIOAP 4140: Principles of Pharmacology (Spring)

The summer college courses taught by BTS faculty are as follows:

  • VTBMS 1200: Veterinary Medicine: Science & Practice
  • VTBMS 1210: Genomic Data Science in Dogs.
