DVM Foundation Courses
BTS is responsible for administering five of the fifteen foundation courses in the DVM curriculum. These five courses are as follows:
- VTMED 5100 – Foundation Course I: The Animal Body (Year 1 Fall)
- VTBMS 5200 – Foundation Course II: Cell Biology and Genetics (Year 1 Fall)
- VTMED 5220 – Neuroanatomy (Year 1 Spring)
- VTMED 5300 – Foundation Course IIIa: Function and Dysfunction part 1 (Year 1 Spring)
- VTMED 5310 – Foundation Course IIIb: Function and Dysfunction part 2 (Year 2 Fall)
The disciplinary areas of primary focus are anatomy, pathology, molecular biology, neurology, physiology, and pharmacology. The pedagogical approach of Foundation Course I and III in particular is centered on problem-based learning (PBL). Foundation Courses I, II, and III involve several dozens of faculty members (from BTS and across the entire college, especially the Department of Clinical Sciences and the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences) to serve as tutor group facilitators, lecturers, laboratory supervisors, and other important teaching roles. Each of the foundation courses has one primary course leader (CL) and a course design group (CDG) comprised of dedicated faculty members that provide broad content expertise and help the CL to develop, review, and deliver a high-quality course. BTS faculty also contribute to Foundation Courses that are administered by other departments in the college. An overview of the DVM curriculum can be found here.
